Choosing The Name For Baby
We often have conflicting views to our partners when it comes to naming baby. One parent may have a whole list of names that they like whilst the other parent may have a completely different list with no similarities at all. We want a name that stands out but not one that is so uncommon that people might think it a bit weird.
In recent years we have seen a whole bunch of celebrities naming their children in what most people would think was a rather selfish way. We might well wonder what the child will make of it when they are at school and the other kids are not entirely considerate about the name they have been given.
We want a name that is different but we also want it to fit in. Special but not outrageous, I guess. Traditional names that had been out of fashion now seem to be back in fashion and some might see them as old fashioned but feelings change with each generation and though you may remember a name as being from a different era, to those having their children now the names are fresh, new and even a little exciting.

Difficult and unique names are often mispronounced and may be difficult to spell so your child may have constantly correct others in how they pronounce and spell their name. Usually a child will choose a nickname they are comfortable with but other children may find different nicknames that are less kind and they may be teased or made fun of because of a strange name.
My son and his wife are expecting their first child and they have been searching for baby boy names since they found out the sex of the baby. Both have come up with some ideas but it is early days yet, so there is no rush to find a name. Like most expectant parents they have bought a book of names to find out the different meanings and to get some ideas. My daughter-in-law believes that what ever you are named will be significant to your destiny. She is called Jane and she doesn't like having such a common name. I think that this must be why she is spending so much time looking at baby boy names. My son is stressing about this because he remembers teasing kids in his class in school who had unusual names. He fears that if his wife insists on a strange name his son will be ridiculed and called by a nickname anyway.

My daughter-in-law insists that whatever name they give to their son is what everyone will call the child and she does not want them to be called by a shortened version or a nickname. Warning her that she cannot control what other people decide to do has had no effect and it is always possible that when he grows and matures he may decide that he would rather have people call him something different than the name his parents give him.
When my son asked me for my opinion I told him that my only wish for them is that their baby is healthy. That no matter what name they give to him I will love him because he is their child, and will be my first grandchild.
